The tile needs to be grouted and sealed next, once the tiles are hard set. Then onto the ceiling, installing the toliet, trim, door, switches/outlet, fan, mirror, shelving and towel racks. Getting there!
I am a little behind posting progress on the bathroom so here are a few pictures of the drywall, cement board and floor tiling stage. Instead of putting the full wall back on the back of the bathtub, we decided to go with a half wall instead. The doorway is narrow already and was such a pinch point to begin with. Hopefully it will feel a little less claustrophobic entering the bathroom now.

Painting, more tiling and cabinet to come.Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-20349606121620775302016-07-24T11:54:00.000-05:002016-07-24T11:54:40.120-05:00Demo Days

So in my last post about our leaky water pipe and no plans to renovate that bathroom in the near future... well plans changed. We are renovating it and its now the top of the master project list. At least the reason wasn't our own wandering interests this time.

Shortly after Zachary patched up our leak, we had an home inspection with our house insurance. The pipes were still exposed at the time and the inspector just noted it as in process of renovation. Few weeks later, our insurance notified us they wanted us to submit completed renovation photos of that bathroom within 30 days. Sigh... So we are renovating the bathroom. Its okay, needed to be done anyway.

Shortly after we got back from our 3 week trip up north in Wisconsin in May, the beginning of June presented us with a damp mystery. The door way floor boards between the second bedroom and hallway were starting to bubble up.

After investigating the roof, attic and duct work, we were no closer to finding the water source. The padding under the flooring was sopping wet. Noticing the baseboard in the bedroom was damp too, we turned our attention to the second bathroom. The second bathroom is the only room completely untouched by our renovations so far, as we were leaving it for after we get other projects completed. (And also not doing any demolition in there until we need to rent a dumpster again, probably when replacement windows/siding is underway). Our master bathroom renovations is 98% complete, so we have been using that bathroom primarily and not using the second bathroom much anymore

Zachary noticed it was damp under the sink at the wall in the vanity. Since it is planned to be gutted eventually, he tore out the sink and vanity to get at the pipes.

Sure enough, there was a hairline crack in a water line, it was misting ever so slightly, slowly making that wall wet. We had the water shut off while we were away the month before, so who knows when the pipe started leaking. Then while repairing the bad joint, another started leaking. Zachary patched up both and no more leaking! This would have been a bigger mess if this occurred on a finished wall without easy access.

So the second bathroom is half out of commission now, missing a sink. We aren't going to try to put the old vanity back in, it was in rough shape to begin with and we rarely use that bathroom now anyway.

Good news, the 3 damaged floor boards in the hallway are in a convenient spot to remove and replace with new boards, as we have a extra box of that flooring hanging around. Whew!Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-78685131070701555852016-03-27T13:11:00.000-05:002016-03-27T13:11:13.296-05:00Garden Wall & GateSince we are way behind on posting some projects, we'd thought we would catch up on a few and get back up to speed again.

Early last fall we built a garden wall and gate on the west side of the house, between our house and the neighbor's fence. Zachary laid 2 runs of concrete blocks with mortar. After they set, he skim coated the walls.

Once the skim coat had enough time to cure, about 2 weeks, he painted the walls with a exterior primer.

After the primer was dry, the finish color went on. We went with a beige, something neutral enough that would coordinate with whatever the color the house will be in the future.

He built a wooden gate and mounted it on the walls, along with wrought iron planters that we have had following us around for a few years. I always liked them, just didn't know where to put them. The walls seemed like a great place for them. I thought about putting real plants in them, but knew it would be a hassle trying to keep something alive in a small pot and also risk staining the walls, so we just went with some artificial greenery.
Zachary has been busy in the shop with projects lately, with fresh dustings of sawdust weekly. Many projects to post about, soon of course. :-)
Happy New Year! After going to bed well before mid-night the night before, we started the 2016 with sea side donuts from Thomas Donut Shop. An excellent resolution. And maybe to blog more. :-)Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-4872583064329236372015-11-01T11:57:00.000-06:002015-11-01T11:57:06.731-06:00Halloween

Spent some time at Pine Log State Forest yesterday and found some spooky autumn Cypresses along the lake. Not much for fall trees color in Florida, but Cypresses offer their own kind of beauty.

When we got home from our trip last Sunday, the yard and lawn was looking a little shaggy, but not too terrible. Our creek bed and banks had exploded in growth and was a couple feet high in places.

We have been battling overgrowth in the creek since we lived here and this spring we decided to keep the banks around the creek where it is narrow mowed. When we got back from our trip, we were on the fence about letting it grow and try again next winter or attempt to reclaim our progress. Today we decided to try to take it back again.

We got a good foothold again. We have some more to do to get it back where it was earlier this summer, but that will be our project this week.
I have had a growing urge to do some painting again for some while, so today I actually broke out my watercolors and did 2 quick studies of lavender and black-eyed susans. Watercolor is a tricky medium and I have some practice to do, but I did enjoy myself. I need to let my artistic side out more. I haven't touched watercolors since college.
I am not too happy with the black-eyed susans, I think I rushed the color layering and didn't let it dry enough in between. I like the lavender blossoms though, the stems were more of an after thought.
While it was a mostly work trip for me in Wisconsin, we managed to squeeze in time seeing friends and family in Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. We took off in the wee hours of July 2nd and headed for Holland, MI for a weekend with the Hilldores.

Prior to leaving, we made arrangements for the neighbor to look after our cats and the mail. We also set up a web cam to look in on the cats while we were away. We felt a little guilty leaving them for 18 days and felt slightly better we could see them lounging around the living room while we were away.
We had a wonderful time in Holland with Ben and Amanda and the kids. It was relaxing a holiday weekend filled with games, a picnic, catching up and playing the with kids. (thanks for putting up with us!) Zachary picked up a RC micro quad-copter at a hobby store to drive our cats crazy.
After the weekend we headed to Wisconsin for me to start my office visit for work for almost 2 weeks. The upper midwest summer weather was a welcome treat compared to Florida summer weather. We got to wear pants and light zip ups at times! While I was in the office, Zachary kept busy helping my parents with random projects at the house and the farm. (thanks Mom and Dad for putting up with us also!)
Speaking of foods, we also took advantage of being in proximity of Luigi's Pizza and Simon's Cheese and filled up on favorites. Yum...
Also got to see 2 of my brothers and their families and caught up on the goings on, and my Uncle Bob and Aunt Becky and cousin Kelsey too. We didn't get to see everyone this visit, but hope to see them the next time we are in town. Summer is a busy time of year for everyone.
After finishing up work stuff we headed to Illinois to see Zachary's mom and Bob and the boys. It was fun to catch up and give the nephews some pointers in Minecraft.

On the way home we broke the drive into 2 days and stayed a night in southern Indiana. We both agree the states of Indiana and Alabama are way too long to drive through. It felt like we were in Indi-bama for most of the drive with a blink through Kentucky and Tennessee. Pulled into our driveway Sunday night, July 19, to 2 cats happy to see us. Its good to be in our own bed and not living out of a suitcase anymore. Long drives like these makes us really appreciate Rest Areas that are along the interstates. We stop at nearly everyone, to stretch out every 80 or so miles. They are generally clean and tidy, and gets us to switch driving more often. More pleasant than most gas stations and you can take your time and relax.
In June we spent a day at St. Andrews State Park and Shell Island. St. Andrews is just on the east end of PCB and we still hadn't visited Shell Island since we moved here, so we hopped on a shuttle from the park. Shell Island is a undeveloped barrier island between St. Andrews Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is a short 10 minute shuttle pontoon trip from the park.

While waiting for the shuttle we wandered around the pier, which was busy with fishermen and sightseers.

The Shell Island beaches are a little more natural than the groomed ones in town, with more vegetation and random things washed ashore. It was quite windy that day as well, red flag day, so the surf was strong.
Hello again out there! I have some posts to catch up from June and July. I finally downloaded my photos from my camera the last 2 months and have plenty to share. I had some computer drama in May/June and we just got back from a nearly 3 week road trip from up north this month. Things are settling back down again in our little world in the steamy Florida humidity.

Here is a quick 2 photos from today. Freyja gets a lot of enjoyment of what visits our windows. The evenings are always a treat for her, as the living room lights attract the frogs, lizards and insects the window panes. This morning she had a daytime visitor, a green grasshopper on the patio door. When she gets a window buddy, she gets very vocal about it and jumps at them. Usually the window buddy is un-phased by her antics, which perplexes her.Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-89319095671438098752015-06-07T22:04:00.000-05:002015-06-07T22:04:37.714-05:00Anniversary

It was our wedding anniversary this past weekend, 11 years already. Time has sped by and yet preparing for our wedding day seems like a lifetime ago. It has been 11 wonderful years together, and we look forward what adventures lay ahead.

We had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, McGuire's in Destin and walked the beach. We vowed to walk the beach more in the future, we don't do it nearly enough.Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-61190399477333178532015-06-07T12:51:00.000-05:002015-06-07T12:51:38.423-05:00Efficiency

Replacing our heating and cooling system in our house has been on the list since we bought the place just over 2 years ago. Old and inefficient, it gets quite costly to run in the summer and any cold snaps. We had gotten complacent with it, with the attitude. "well it is still running, let it be". Until last week when it was obvious the house temperature creeped up and the AC could not bring it down. Curse our complacency! We called a company to come out and give us a quote on a new system, as we were not interested in repairing. Parts of our system is 30 years old and the other parts are 20. At first we were interested in participating in our electric utility's rebate program on installing a new high-efficiency unit. When the service guys started doing the baseline test on our old system, it was failing to complete it without doing couple hundred dollars in repairs to get it functioning well enough in the baseline test for the rebate program. Which in the long run, the repair would wipe our any rebate savings we would have gotten with a new system.

We went with a 14 SEER rated unit. The service guy told us our old system probably operated at a 7, when it was in its prime. Even though it is a expensive purchase, it is well worth it for peace of mind and energy savings. It is also a lot quieter too. We probably should have done this sooner. I am actually looking forward to the energy bill when it comes again, to see what our average usage will be going forward. So far, by checking our energy consumption online by day since we replaced it, its dropped quite a bit, roughly 45%. I am glad it perished now, instead while we were out of town or July/August in the peak of the summer heat. We had a few sticky days around the house before we got our replacement, but it could have been a lot worse. Our cats even liked laying in the fan breeze while we were without AC.
It feels good to mark this big item off the master to-do list for the house. Although we had no DIY at all with it, it is a big milestone for getting the house complete.
That cinder block wall behind the tree is a project Zachary is in the middle of, a short wall and garden gate to the backyard, that spans the gap between our house and the neighbor's fence. Surprisingly I had a early lead and maintained it over Zachary. But it vanished on the 18th hole, with my 7 strokes... Zachary nearly got the $50 prize for a hole in one on the 18th, but narrowly missed the cup. I think we'll be back again soon for a rematch, it was a nice course and they have 2 courses.
We had an uncommon for our yard visitor the other day, a Florida Softshell turtle. I have seen them before in PCB, but down at St. Andrews State Park. I am guessing she is a she, as the females are larger than males and she was quite large for a softshell. We've had many turtles nesting in our yard this spring, having sandy ground and being close to the creek. We don't mind, they don't disturb much. Most of our turtle visitors are Box Turtles. She is our biggest reptile to visit us yet. I hope it stays that way. :-)

Besides building a tea box, Zachary has been circling back on a few unfinished projects. Our hallway has been lacking trim since we moved in. Again using up the reclaimed cedar from the old carsiding, he milled baseboard, crown molding and door casings for the hallway.

While working in the hallway, it was time to deal with the neglected hall closet. This was the last colset in the house to have that annoying wire shelving. The hall closet is the hub for the house's internet, media and sound system. While we don't have all the electronics in place, we needed a clean breathable space for them. The second part of the closet needs to function as a closet, storing cleaning supplies, cat food and the vacuum.

The closet ceiling is also the access to the attic.

So Zachary patched the screw holes and painted the closet to match the hallway. The top 2 shelves will serve the home electronics. The pull out cabinets and bottom shelf is for storage.

He rebuilt the ceiling access to the attic in cedar, so it is not as crummy looking as before.

Zachary built the cabinet and pull out drawers out of the cedar as well.
The sawdust and wood shavings have been pouring out of the garage lately and one of the by-products was a tea box for me. I was scouting Amazon for a container for all my tea bags and realized Zachary could build me something well made and have it before I could say free 2-day prime shipping.

I gave him a tea packet for sizing. Using some scraps of cedar wood, he cut, planed and glued up a 8 compartment box in no time.
Before we moved to Florida, Zachary had a pretty nice large Crasftman table saw. While we were downsizing the household for the big cross country move, that and a few other large shop tools didn't make the cut. It was sad at the time, but it was the most practical at the moment. We didn't know what we would be doing once we were in Florida, let alone where to keep it all.

Present day, the shop tool collection is growing again. Zachary's job is remodeling our house, in hopes of making a good investment return in a couple years. While he misses the large shop tools he once had, he still doesn't have the space for it all. We hope our next house will have a proper large shop space for Zachary's tools and creations, but in the meantime he is making the best out of what we have. Sometimes restrictions brings out creative ingenuity.

Shortly after we bought this house, we also bought a small portable table saw for projects. It does the job, but not well. Small work surface, uneven cuts, etc. Inspired by a few creative woodworkers on YouTube, Zachary set out to enhance his table saw.

He disassembled the table saw, removing the motor and mechanism out of the body.

Using a table top from a old cabinet, he cut out a space for the blade to come out of the new work top surface. You can see the old cabinet in the picture above. We got 2 of these cabinets for free from a large local resort that was remodeling their guest rooms. The tops are maple, great for making a solid work surface.
It took some fiddling to get the saw mechanisms to work correctly in the new housing. After a while, the movement of the saw settings were moving smoother than they ever did in the original saw body.
He put wheels on it, so it can easily be moved around the garage and driveway. The driveway is often an extension of the small garage as a work area, so that was essential. While he still would like a nice large table saw again one day, this enhanced table saw is a far improvement to what he had for not much investment and a little time & patience. He will be adding miter slots to the top and a cutting fence.
Zachary has fully recovered from his surgery and has been busy with projects again around the house, feeling healthy and energized again.

One of his first priorities was getting his garage workshop in order again. It was cluttered and neglected for a number of months. Tools, totes, and misc everywhere, with no workspace. Inspired by his wood magazines, he built a multi-faceted storage cabinet. With 4 swinging and nesting doors, it took care a lot of the clutter on his small tool bench.

Craving a large work table for projects, he also built a movable tool bench. Using mostly scrap lumber we have, he layered several sheets of old plywood, creating a solid and level work surface. He plans on getting a bench vise for it soon. It is a heavy sucker, but will be a great space for projects for years to come.
He still has some more organization planned for the shop, but it is nice to see the garage floor again.
So I think I am on a 2 container growing cycle in my grass growing experiment. If I soak seeds on Saturday, plant on Sunday, by Thursday/Friday the new grass is ready to be released to the cats. Freyja likes to get on the counter the day before and taste test the new crop of course. While last weeks pot is still green, it is pretty battered and wilted and not appealing anymore to them once the fresh growth is available. It looks like I'll have to replace part of the soil each time, as the wheat puts down a heavy root system.
Our cats enjoy fresh grass to nibble on. I have bought the grass kits and potted grass at the pet store in the past, but it gets expensive after a while and doesn't last long. (At least with our cats)

So I bought a few cute tin containers from a yard sale for a quarter a piece and spray painted them blue and green.

I am started the seed soaking process today on a second planting and might make a third pot later for the rotation, depending how quickly the cats demolish each pot between re-plantings. It was surprising how quickly and easy it was to grow with a little care. Hopefully I can get the rotation timing right, so I can keep a healthy pot out for them most of the time.
Having it around, the cats seem to leave my other house plants alone. I also believe they don't throw up as much when the grass is available to them. It is the same variety people make their wheatgrass juice drinks too, although Freyja may not want to share.Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149247309792563794.post-28134157589598243492015-03-09T17:30:00.001-05:002015-03-09T17:30:18.656-05:00Shredder

Freyja seems to get possessive about the paper shredder when I use it. She takes great interest in it when I am shredding and usually by the time I am done, she is on top of it, blocking it. Maybe she takes offense to something in the house called the shredder, and it is not her? She does a good job of shredding boxes, toilet paper, tissues and humans.
Yesterday we hosted our annual yard sale. Well we did it 2 years in a row now, so it is annual I guess? We had nice weather and a great turnout. I think overall we brought in a little less than last year, but we had more smaller items this year. My parents "re-habbed" a few beaten-up pieces with some paint and patience and those items sold well. I think Z and I will keep that in mind for some small projects over the coming year, and be on the lookout for some junk that needs a little tlc. Our patio chairs we repainted and recovered last year were inquired about often by our sale visitors yesterday, as we had them out front for us to sit on. The chairs in their original form were for sale at last years yard sale and no one was interested. This year, I think 8 people asked if they were for sale!
This fancy handcrafted birdhouse has followed us around for maybe the last 5 years? I won it in a raffle about 5 years ago and it has been in the garage or closet ever since. I really like it but never picked a good place for it or we lived where we couldn't put it out. Zachary installed it on a post overlooking the stream today. Should be a prime spot for future feathered tenants, as the birds visit the stream often. I look forward to who moves in, it is a duplex!

Installing the birdhouse was one of Zachary's first projects in a while. He is slowly getting his strength back as he had surgery last month. He had been increasing pain for a number of months and feeling crummy and it turned out his gallbladder was the culprit, and had it removed. He is excited to be feeling much better and strong enough to work on smaller projects again. He still has to be careful not to over-exert himself, but says he feels better than he has in months.Zachary and Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01387264065936921170noreply@blogger.com0
